What is traditional Chinese herbal medicine?

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine uses plant-derived materials and, in some traditions, other natural substances as part of a broader system of care. Preparations may contain one ingredient or a combination. Traditional use is not the same as scientific proof of effectiveness for every condition.

Four important considerations.

Ask for the full ingredient list, intended purpose, sourcing and quality controls, possible side effects, storage and expiry information, and potential interactions with prescription medicines or supplements.

Before using an herbal preparation.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about herbs and supplements you use. Take extra care if you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are preparing for surgery, or take regular medication. Do not stop prescribed treatment in favor of herbs.

Safety reminder: Do not stop prescribed medication or delay urgent medical care in favor of complementary treatments. Discuss herbs and supplements with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a medical condition or take regular medication.
