Overview of Brain Tumors

Brain tumors are defined as an abnormal growth of cells in the brain or within the central spinal canal. Due to the sensitivity of the brain area, any brain tumor can be life-threatening. Brain tumors can be cancerous or non-cancerous; however, both types can have serious consequences for the patient.

Cancerous brain tumors can be localized to one area of the brain but have devastating effects on the entire brain. Brain tumors can cause severe headaches, migraines, unexplained vomiting and neurological dysfunction.

Early detection of brain tumors is uncommon as most symptoms can be related to other illnesses. Only with diagnostic tools that can assess intracranial activity can it be determined if a patient is suffering from a brain tumor, malign or benign. Any disruption of the blood-brain barrier can indicate a brain tumor. Only an MRI or CT can detect this.

The most common form of brain tumors are gliomas, occurring in over 50% of patients. The second most common form is meningioma at 21% occurrence. Pituitary adenomas (15%) and nerve sheath tumors (8%) follow close behind.

Chemical and Surgical Treatments

Surgery and radiation are the most common forms of treatment for brain cancer. If the tumor can be removed via surgery, the neurological team will use a minimally invasive technique to do so, which is followed by radiation. If the tumor is unreachable, then radiation therapy will be used to destroy the tumor using beta and gamma rays. Chemotherapy is not commonly used in treating brain cancer, as the chemicals do not reach the brain because of the blood brain barrier.
